Testing of deer blood helps fight disease November 7, 2011 Maine, Kennebec Journal

The state Center for Disease Control and Prevention is gathering samples from deer killed by hunters across Maine to track Eastern equine encephalitis [EEE]. According to State Epidemiologist Dr. Stephen Sears, ... the virus is not actually in the deer -- it's the antibody deer put out when they are bitten that is still present. "You can't get it from a deer," Sears said of EEE. "It's absolutely safe to eat."
