... Before you all get huffy and say that there are more deer today than ever before, let me remind you that in the North Country of both states that is not true. Yes, big bucks can be found up north but the majority of the deer are located from Bangor south in Maine, and the White Mountains south in New Hampshire...  more deer are killed here in southern Maine and New Hampshire by automobiles than by hunters ...

... With about 200,000 whitetails in the state, Maine deer hunters harvested 21,553 animals in 2012.... two consecutive mild winters, helping the deer population to recover to what it was prior to severe winters in 2007-08 and 2008-09, which wiped out more than 30 percent of the deer herd...

... Maine’s deer harvest was up 13 percent over the 2011 harvest. A total of 21,365 deer were taken by hunters last year including 15,271 bucks, a 19-percent jump (2,473 bucks) over the previous season....MDIFW biologists said that following another mild winter over 2012 deer hunters should expect to see an increase in Maine’s deer population for the 2013 season.

Maine's deer herd was reeling after brutal back-to-back winters between December of 2007 and March of 2009... 30 percent of the state’s deer may have died... Biologists hunkered down and became even more conservative when allotting any-deer permits, which allow hunters the option of shooting bucks, does or fawns.  And Mother Nature cooperated, with four straight mild winters...
