... CWD has never been found in California, though it's been confirmed in wild deer and elk in eight states — Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming. CWD, similar to the "mad cow disease" that caused a beef ... In 2003, the DFG enacted a policy that forbids bringing deer and elk skulls and spines into the state to keep CWD-contaminated brain matter from spreading to California...Pat Fitzmorris, field director for the California Deer Association, said the tests should be funded to protect the state's deer herds, which are already struggling.
