...the county’s deer herd rebound from an all-time low after the drought years of the late 1980s and early 1990s and then survive the spate of catastrophic wildfires in the last decade...“The herd has been stable,” [Randy] Botta said there are between 5,500 and 6,200 deer on public, “huntable” land in San Diego County.... A fawn per doe is something we strive for ... something that doesn’t occur. In the herd plan, we try to achieve 20 bucks per 100 does. So we’re over our herd goals there. If you can maintain 20 to 25 bucks per 100 does, I think that’s achieving what we want to see in the deer herd plan...
