A gray wolf returns to the Golden State January 9, 2012 California, Santa Rosa Press Democrat

A lone gray wolf crossed into Siskiyou County on Dec. 28 ... ending an absence from the Golden State that had lasted almost 90 years. 
Wolves primarily feed on other wildlife — mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, coyotes — and conservationists say that by taking weaker animals, wolves help strengthen herds. Thinning deer herds also benefits forests, which otherwise can be overbrowsed ... [the deer population in California has fallen by about 50 percent over the last 20 years]..
