...However, Ron Colombani, president of the local chapter of the California Deer Association and a former DFG game warden, disagrees with that assessment.

Once refuges are eliminated, “the deer kill will go up and then there won’t be any safe havens” for deer, he said. “They’re not managing to protect wildlife. They’re managing to (sell) more deer tags.”
The CDA is a nonprofit wildlife conservation organization formed by sportsmen in 1996. Its principal goal is to improve California deer herds and other wildlife through financial support for habitat improvement and research projects.

As many as 1 million acres could be opened up to hunting statewide if the Legislature eliminates the refuges.
