Mary Belkin, deer team leader for Haven Wild Care, said she responds to 35 to 50 calls a year in Shasta, Siskiyou and Tehama counties about deer injured by a fence. Ninety-nine percent of the time the deer is killed or too injured to save, she said.

A similar situation in Los Altos, in Santa Clara County, spurred the city to ban spikes and sharp points on new fences in January, according to the Los Altos Town Crier.

In February 2009, Mabel Honeyball, who was then 71, fell off her porch in Mountain Gate and was impaled by a spike adorning a wrought iron gate.
