Forest Density, Wildfire, and Deer

The results of research on the relationship between forest density, wildfire, and deer in California is available here in a knowledge base with data available in an easy to download spreadsheet format.  Reduced timber removed from California forests has resulted in increased forest density that, statistical evidence indicates has led to larger wildfires and a smaller deer population.  As illustrated in the graph below that was presented to the 2019 Western Wildlife Society conference, timber explains 63.4 percent of the variation in the reduced deer harvest from 1978 to 2016.  Adding drought as a variable explains 75.3 percent of the variation in the deer harvest.  A peer reviewed research paper.
