Aerial surveys conducted in the summer of 2001 documented 393 deer in Zone 4 of the preserve's Stairsteps Unit, and numbers have decreased every year since, with a low of seven deer in 2010. "The decline happened over a real short period," said Lyle McCandless, president of the Big Cypress Sportsmen's Alliance. "It kind of snuck up on everybody. "That habitat down there is lower quality habitat anyway, and when water levels come up, that makes it tough for deer to survive."
