This year's deer herd appear in good shape despite drought and flooding  November 20, 2011 Louisiana, NOLA.com, Amy Sancetta

... "The deer herd is in pretty good shape," advised Scott Durham, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries deer program manager. "The drought probably had some impact on reproduction, which might affect future years... We estimate the state population at between 500,000 and 700,000 animals, down a bit from the 1,000,000 estimated about 10 years ago. The smaller number is more reflective of the carrying capacity of the available habitat we have today."
