... Habitat for deer was poor at the turn of the 20th century. In 1925 the population estimates were at an all time low: 20,000 deer in the state... around the late 1940s or early 1950s there was a restocking effort. They went into Madison and Tensas Parishes to trap some deer and released them in uninhabited portions ... the first legal antlerless harvest was in 1959 ...
