Deer Culling 2011 [Public Comment] October 24, 2011 Maryland

The Montgomery County Parks Department has announced the start of a public comment period regarding deer management in Sligo. The Department proposes culling deer for the first time in Sligo Creek Park this winter....In its announcement on October 11 (Read the press release), the Department solicits public comment through Thursday, November 10, primarily from residents in the neighborhoods surrounding the golf course. The Parks Department will take these comments into account before reaching a final decision on whether to cull deer this winter in Sligo. Residents may submit comments to: 
All comments must include the writer’s full name and address to be considered....At the annual meeting with Parks staff in June, FOSC board members, committee chairs, and section stewards learned that the Department required a clear position from the Friends of Sligo Creek Board regarding deer management before they would proceed further with any proposals for culling deer in the Park....In its subsequent letter of support to Director of Parks Mary Bradford, the board cited the overwhelming support for deer culling evidenced in our 2009 survey. The results showed that fully 80 percent of 552 respondents supported culling, either immediately (56 percent) or after Parks consulted with the community (24 percent).
