Longtime DNR wildlife manager at Cloquet retires, logging gives habitat for deer July 8, 2012 Minnesota, Duluth News Tribune 
... In the late ’60s and ’70s, the deer herd really took a hit. We didn’t think we’d ever have another either-sex hunt. Now we have seasons with limits of five deer. Part of the story is how economics can change what’s happening on the landscape. When markets developed for balsam and aspen, there was a huge amount of harvesting through the 1980s and 1990s. That really changed the habitat for deer... So, we had excellent habitat on top of a series of relatively mild winters ... Rich Staffon ... will retire on Friday after 36 years as a biologist with the state of Minnesota ...
