Bitterroot Valley sportsmen told wildlife officials they were willing to sacrifice opportunities to shoot elk in the East Fork of the Bitterroot in order to protect the long-term viability of that herd. But what most hunters didn't want to give up was the opportunity to spend time in the woods they hold dear during hunting season... They heard that big-game populations across the Northern Rockies are down in areas where there are large parcels of public land.
