... After a catastrophic crash in 1996-97, both whitetail and mule deer made pretty steady upward progress. Then in 2006, the graphs take a steep decline. “Now we’re seeing buck harvests drop to levels we haven’t seen since 1983 ... The drop-off coincides with an upswing of gray wolves in western Montana... It also matches a big jump in mountain lion and black bear populations ...There are now three times as many lions as wolves in the Blackfoot ... The last decade saw several years of liberal B-tag sales for antlerless deer hunting...
