Antler restrictions are aimed at protecting yearling bucks heading into their second winter. According to proponents, allowing spikes to reach maturity makes for larger deer in future seasons, a more rewarding hunting experience and a healthier overall population...“At this point the deer plan isn’t proposing any statewide or Southern Zone-wide antler restriction,” pointed out DEC biologist Jeremy Hurst. “It’s simply proposing to keep the restriction... and to expand it into some neighboring management units...“The average deer we’re taking is 30 pounds heavier than it was 10, 15 years ago,” ....
