According to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission's white-tailed deer density map, Orange and Durham counties have upwards of 40 deer per square mile. [latestForest Service research indicates 15 to 28 deer per square mile is good with some forest regeneration at higher densities] ... “Our researchers have been having problems at their experimental site, and the deer population has been affecting what they were trying to study.” ... said Sara DiBacco Childs, Duke Forest program director.
