... approximately 1.25 million white-tailed deer in North Carolina according to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. But, western North Carolina has the lowest populations ... The EBCI Fisheries and Wildlife Management Program has implemented the white-tailed deer research pilot project and has released 58 deer on tribal reserve lands.... “The purpose of the project is to prescribe near-term direction for researching, re-introducing and managing white-tailed deer on tribal lands.” - Robert Blankenship, Wildlife Program Manager for Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
