The latest mule deer survey done in the spring of 2011 showed 1,756 mule deer over 293.8 square miles.  Overall, mule deer density in the Badlands was 6.0 deer per square mile, which is down from 7.8 deer per square mile in 2010 and less than the long-term average of 6.9 deer per square mile.
