... Cougars: Kill approximately one deer every 7.3 days in winter, slightly less in summer. This averages out to about 50 per year per cougar. In one study on Mt. Emily about 45 percent of their diet was elk and 44 percent deer....Their total reduction of Oregon deer and elk herds? About 285,000 animals per year ... The public needs to be aware that “non-management” techniques which work in primitive national park areas don’t in areas where civilization has encroached.
