Heard around the trail (measure fawn to doe ratio to measure deer herd health)  February 20, 2011  Pennsylvania  Standard Speaker

"From 2000 until 2005, we sought to reduce deer numbers in all Wildlife Management Units," Roe said. "From 2006 until today, except for our most urbanized WMUs - 2B, 5C and 5D - the goal for each of the other 19 WMUs has been to stabilize deer population trends or allow an increase in the deer population trends where habitat and deer reproductive data support such increases."

The recommendations call for the commission to: track the ratio of fawns to does as a measure of herd health, include national and state data when measuring forest health, and realigning surveys to include more non-hunters when seeking advice from citizens about deer-human interactions such as motor vehicle accidents.
