Floods tough on wildlife December 31, 2011 Tennessee, Memphis Commercial Appeal

The immense deer herd and wild turkey population on picturesque Presidents Island were decimated by the rapidly rising water... one conservation official estimated that 60 percent of them were wiped out.  Though deer are capable swimmers, many were no match for the swift currents of the swollen Mississippi. Conservation officers were forced to kill numerous deer that were found tangled in barbed-wire fences or in the tops of trees that were surrounded by 40 feet of water...
