... CWD is a brain infection that strikes cervids — whitetails, mule deer, elk. It's is related to Mad Cow Disease and its human variant, Cruetzfeldt-Jakob Disease... These deer came from an area close to the New Mexico border ... It wasn't in a pen of whitetails on some ranch ... It wasn't in some densely populated, rural pocket of the Hill Country ... And it wasn't in a subdivision around Austin or San Antonio where deer live in such numbers ... It was found in two mule deer in an area truly sparsely populated with deer....
