Controlled burns begin in area's national forests February 2, 2012 Texas, Lufkin Daily News 

Controlled burning dramatically reduces the chances of a wildfire spreading out of control, forestry officials said, and burning the underbrush also promotes new growth of tender vegetation that is beneficial to wildlife such as deer, turkey and birds.
