F&W chief gives deer management overview June 24, 2011 Vermont Management - Vermont Today

The Legislature last year inserted a measure in the budget that effectively gave Doug Nelson, owner of a game preserve, ownership of wild animals. Both environmentalists and sportsmen loathed the measure, Berry said, and it was reversed with a bill the Legislature passed this year. In southern Vermont earlier this year he heard from hunters that they were seeing no deer.  There are certainly fewer deer in the state, said Berry, and that has a lot to do with the way the landscape has changed.  Decades ago the state had a lot of “early successional” forest, said Berry, which made for a perfect habitat.
The mature forest that exists now can’t sustain the same population, he said.
