 ...deer herd management still is one of the hottest political issues that Patrick Berry, the commissioner ...  There are certainly fewer deer in the state, said Berry, and that has a lot to do with the way the landscape has changed. Decades ago the state had a lot of “early successional” forest, which made for a perfect habitat. The mature forest that exists now cannot sustain the same population, he said. It’s a challenge for the department because state statute requires that the department of fish and wildlife balance forest health and the deer herd, said Berry.
