... If disease spread outside the preserve it would force the state to shoot thousands of white-tailed deer.... The law was clear: No one could legally own a wild animal or keep it behind a fence.... But protesters wanted a guarantee from then-Governor Jim Douglas that Pete wouldn't be killed .... In May, lawmakers reversed the law. Nelson has three years to kill all of the wild deer and moose. Pete was the exception. ... "There was a terrible mistake made last year in granting private ownership of native wildlife to an individual," Vt. Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Patrick Berry said in February 2011.
