In a June meeting, hunters from Bath, Highland and Allegheny counties had a serious pow-wow with VDGIF officials concerning the dwindling number of trophy bucks, and deer management in general. There was discussion about restricting the kill of smaller bucks so the animals would have time to grow. The average buck killed in Virginia is a 1½ years old,...not only is there a shortage of bucks in the western mountains, there is fast becoming a shortage of does....The cruel winter of 2009-10, no doubt took a heavy toll on all wildlife....the elephant in the room is the coyote population. It has exploded in the western counties.
