... Last winter the city culled 116 deer during December and January, up from an average of 67 a year since the hunts began in 1993.... A spokesman for the College of William & Mary said no deer are culled from College Woods. Contrary to perception, the hunts in Williamsburg are not conducted with bows or deer rifles, since that risks an errant shot hitting people. Instead, the hunts are conducted from elevated tree stands with shotguns.
