'Dr. Deer' says key for herd is habitat October 15, 2011 Wisconsin, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

When James Kroll of Nacogdoches, Texas, was named Wisconsin's white-tailed deer trustee earlier this month, the state entered a new chapter of deer management. The state's deer management program has been reviewed by panels, consultants and experts ... Kroll ... "My goal with this review is to create a model for 21st-century deer management." Though he didn't offer specifics, he did say the key to deer populations is "habitat, habitat, habitat." ... "If you have healthy forests, you have healthy deer," Kroll said.
