... the all-time record of 528,494 deer taken in 2000. Harvest rates over the next eight years ranged from the low end of 317,888 in 2002 to a high of 413,794 in 2004. However, gun-deer harvest totals fell off the cliff from 2009-2011, with hunters taking 257,511, or fewer, deer each year....  the DNR no longer estimates or “guesstimates” its pre-hunt population ... Our current population goals are set up for an annual harvest around 300,000-350,000 total gun and bow harvest,” ... Kevin Wallenfang, the DNR’s big game ecologist
