DNR: Local deer population up, well over goal March 10, 2012 Wisconsin, La Crosse Tribune 

George Meyer, executive director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, said while deer populations are strong in the southern farmland areas, he’s concerned that populations — and goals — may be too low in northern forest lands.... At the same time, he fears southern areas could face overpopulation with the Legislature’s elimination of Earn-a-Buck, a widely unpopular program that required hunters to kill an antlerless deer before taking a buck.
