Mule deer numbers decline traced to increased oil and gas drilling September 24, 2011 Wyoming

...John Ellenberger of Wildlife Management Consultants in Grand Junction, Colo....said the crux of the problem was increased well drilling impacting mule deer ... the Baggs mule deer herd was in fairly decent shape... there were 16,800 animals in 2008, the latest year for which statistics were available. That figure was up from 10,400 mule deer in 1981 but down from a maximum of 25,800 in 1987....For the area around Rock Springs ... the mule deer herd numbered approximately 7,100 animals in 2008. This is down from a maximum of 11,700 animals in 1986 but up from the minimum number of 5,000 animals in 1995.
