Nothing got Harbour City residents’ dander up more in 2010 than the subject of deer.
That meeting resulted in the formation of a completely new community group – Deer Aware – as well as a concerted effort to get a better understanding of the issue, namely, whether deer populations in Nanaimo are as out of control as deer opponents would have us believe, and whether there is in fact a problem.  Rather than tackle the issue that, for whatever reason, got residents so passionate, council passed a bylaw that addresses one aspect (and some might argue a minor aspect) by banning feeding deer and rabbits.
