"People want to talk about solutions but we're not at that point yet," McKay said. "We want to develop a long-term strategy. This problem isn't going to go away this year or even next year. We need a long-term management plan for the deer situation." MNR does not support a cull of the local deer population but has previously recommended the city modify its no discharge of firearms bylaw to allow hunting in the rural areas of the municipality north of the bypass and area around Kenora Airport. The recommendation was not supported by rural residents who cited safety concerns regarding hunters shooting on back roads where children wait for school buses.
