UK data:  An estimate of 2 million deer in 2021 and 2022, about 1 million in Scotland.  Recent estimates range from about 1.5 to 2 million.  About 350,000 deer are culled each year in the UK.  A 2021 and 2022 estimate for Scotland of about 1 million deer up from about 511,000 in 1990.  About 760,000 deer in 2018 with about 360,000 to 400,000 red deer in 2018.  About 400,000 red deer in 2019. The roe deer is the smallest native British deer, about 500,000 in total throughout the United Kingdom.    The British Deer Society

History:  Roe deer populations in the south were apparently extirpated during the early mediaeval era while a remnant population survived in the north [source].  Later, as a result of over hunting, the roe deer became extinct in England during the 18th Century, but survived in woodland in parts of the central and north west Highlands.
